Piperi – coast of the monk seals

Piperi Island, Northern Sporades – the Last Unknown in the Aegean Sea. Refuge for the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), Eleonora’s falcon (Falco eleonorae), endemic reptile (Podarcis erhardii weigandi) and  plant species (Campanula rechingeri). Core zone of the Marine Park.

The regulations for this conservation area prohibit access to Piperi Island and its coastal waters. No one is permitted, except the members of the non-governmental organisation MOm since its foundation in 1988 (by Vassilis Kouroutos). Park regulations were legalized in 1992. Ever since the public is deprived of the right to experience the magnificent wilderness of Piperi – thanks to some ill-advised public servants in the Ministry of Environment.
